Look beyond the ancient monuments
Athens tells some of its stories on its walls. Large murals, small stencils and painted shutters add another layer to a neighbourhood walk, alongside cafés, workshops and everyday city life.
Neighbourhoods such as Psyrri, Metaxourgeio and Exarcheia offer a starting point for exploring the city’s street art. Choose one area for an unhurried walk, then pause for a coffee or lunch rather than crossing the city to tick off a list of murals.
Let the neighbourhood set the pace
Treat street art as something to notice while exploring, rather than a fixed exhibition. Works can change or disappear, so an older photograph isn't a promise of what you'll find today. Stay on public streets and respect residents, businesses and private property.
Choose a guide if you want the stories behind the work
A guided walk can help put the art in context. Check the route, duration, walking demands and what the individual experience includes. Meeting an artist or seeing a particular mural should only be expected when the tour explicitly promises it.
