Ancient sights, neighbourhood flavours and a day by the sea

Three days gives you time for Athens' famous sights and a little room to wander. Start with the ancient city, spend a day discovering its neighbourhoods, then choose between more time in Athens and an island cruise. Keep the plan flexible: a long lunch or a street you want to explore can be part of the day, too.

Day one: the Acropolis and the streets below

Make the Acropolis your main visit, with time to enjoy the views rather than racing between monuments. Check the official ticket and entry arrangements before you go. Wear comfortable shoes and plan for exposed ground and uneven surfaces.

Afterwards, choose the Acropolis Museum for a closer look at the site's history, or head into Plaka for lunch and a gentler afternoon. If you still have energy, add the Ancient Agora; you don't need to fit every ancient site into one day.

Day two: find your own Athens

Choose one museum that interests you, then leave the rest of the day for neighbourhood life. The National Archaeological Museum offers a broad view of ancient Greece. The Museum of Cycladic Art is a good choice for the ancient Aegean and its distinctive marble figurines. For a journey through Greek culture into later periods, choose the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture at Koumbari Street. Pick the one that appeals most rather than trying to visit all three.

For a food-focused day, explore the central market area or choose a guided tasting experience. Check the individual tour's tastings, dietary arrangements and meeting point before booking. Later, browse Monastiraki and take your time over dinner in Psyrri. A food tour can replace a meal stop, rather than becoming another thing to squeeze in.

Day three: swap city streets for sea views

A day cruise can bring a different pace to your Athens stay: time on deck, island scenery and the chance to enjoy the water when conditions allow. Compare the route, departure harbour, transfers and included meals before choosing your cruise.

Prefer to stay in the city? Use the day for the museum or neighbourhood you skipped, with a leisurely lunch and time for shopping. If you have a flight or ferry later, keep the day local and allow time for the journey to your departure point.

Make the plan work for you

Check each attraction's official opening arrangements for your date. Leave space between timed visits, account for travel across the city and choose a pace that suits your group. For a cruise, review the current calendar and meeting instructions before arranging the rest of your day.
